So recently my coolant light came on in my 533I, I went out got the proper coolant, distilled water, made the mix, all that fun stiff, but when I go to pour the coolant into the obviously near empty coolant reservoir, it immediately starts peeing out of the overflow tube. Am I doing something severely wrong? I don’t know why it immediately starts coming out.

if you pour it in and it starts to pour out, you probably have a hole in the system somewhere

There’s an overflow tube?

For coolant? Which is under pressure so you shouldn’t open your coolant cap when the system is hot?

Also, mixing your own coolant is new to me.

I am unable to help you.

This is sort of a universal rule so double check on a BMW forum because I’ve never worked on a BMW before

WHEN THE ENGINE IS COOL! as in has been off for 3+ hours and the radiator cap is cool to the touch. Open it, you should be able to see coolant when you look down (check to make sure, this may not be true for bimmers). If you can not, add coolant directly through the radiator cap. It’ll drain into the radiator slower than you will pour it in. So pour some, let in drain in then pour some more.

After you’ve done that a few times check for any leaks. If there is none continue until you can see coolant when looking through where the radiator cap sits.

Once you’ve got that done and haven’t found any leaks, start the car. Go ahead and check for leaks while it’s idling. Keep doing so till the engine is mostly warmed up. Also pay attention for a sweet burning smell since that’s what burning coolant smells like.

If it warms all the way up, feel free to rev it a little to speed up the process. It’s either a small leak you couldn’t find or the leak is in a part of the overflow system.

One last thing. After adding coolant with it being low you’ll need to bleed the coolant. (Once again check for your specific car) usually there will be a small bleeder screw near the thermostat you’ll open and run the engine until air bubbles stop coming out of it. Another “ghetto” way of bleeding the coolant is with the engine cold run it for a minute or two without the radiator cap on. (Once again, in my experience this works. On a Bimmer you might get a gyser of coolant IDK) Theirs also a special bowl thing you can buy from autozone/walmart that sits on the radiator cap opening and you fill it with coolant and it’ll add the coolant while simultaneously bleeding the system. I’ve never used it though so can’t vouch for it.

The system is pressurized when working properly. You have a leak somewhere.

The cooling system is a closed system, so if coolant is coming out you have a leak. Youy resevoir is probably cracked. Happened on my wife’s bmw. If there is a open tube hanging off your resevoir then it probably became disconnected from your radiator.

Take a picture of where youre pouring it in, and where its coming out from.

I really hope it is just a disconnected tube and not what other people are saying, otherwise I’ll have new plans for this weekend
